South Africa national football team have expressed disappointment following their 2-0 defeat to Mexico national football team in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Estadio Azteca.

Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured victory for the hosts, handing Bafana Bafana an early setback in their Group A campaign. Softfootball understands that South Africa’s frustrations were compounded by the dismissals of Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, who received red cards in the 49th and 84th minutes respectively and will now miss the team’s next group-stage fixture.

In a statement shared through the national team’s official X channel, South Africa acknowledged the result as a disappointing start to their World Cup journey while urging the squad to quickly move forward. Head coach Hugo Broos stressed the importance of recovery and improving the team’s attacking play ahead of crucial matches against the Czech Republic national football team and South Korea national football team.

South Africa posted:

It ends in defeat at Estadio Azteca, not the start we wanted. On to the next one
