Barcelona president Joan Laporta has once again stressed the club’s total and honest support for Ronald Araujo, after the defender was granted an indefinite leave to focus on his mental well-being.

Softfootball understands that the decision follows the Uruguayan’s red card in the 3–0 Champions League loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, an episode that sparked a wave of criticism and left Araujo reportedly not feeling at his best, mentally or emotionally.

Laporta: We must support Araujo. He is a very emotional and sensitive guy. He showed me his gratitude and told me he will come back motivated.

These are sensitive matters and must be left to specialists. He’s a player we need; we don’t have anyone with his qualities.

Head coach Hansi Flick confirmed Araujo did not feature in Barcelona’s La Liga victory against Atlético Madrid, revealing that the player was not ready and that he needed some time off.

Araujo, 26, has made 15 appearances this season and remains one of the team’s most trusted figures thanks to his mix of strength, leadership, and defensive instincts.

Barcelona’s handling of the situation has drawn praise across Spain, with Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso reminding fans and pundits that “players are not machines,” and commending the Catalan club for putting Araujo’s well-being first.
