Newcastle United opened their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against National League side Gateshead, as on-field positives were overshadowed by continued speculation over captain Bruno Guimarães’ future, Softfootball reports.

The Magpies started brightly, with Jacob Ramsey, Lewis Hall and summer signing Sean Steur producing encouraging displays. Despite dominating large spells of the first half, Newcastle fell behind in the 35th minute when Luke Supyk reacted quickest after Fabian Schär’s conceded free-kick ricocheted into his path, giving Gateshead a surprise lead.

Eddie Howe’s side continued to press after the break and eventually found an equaliser in the 79th minute. Alex Murphy’s excellent pass released Lewis Hall, whose dangerous cross deflected off Ben Williams and into the net.

Away from the pitch, uncertainty surrounding Guimarães continues to dominate headlines. Reports suggest Arsenal have agreed personal terms with the Brazilian midfielder as they intensify efforts to secure his signature, leaving Newcastle facing another crucial decision before the Premier League season begins.

Although it was only a pre-season friendly, the Magpies will hope future preparations focus more on football than transfer speculation as they build towards the new campaign.
