Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has defended his side’s performance following a disappointing 0-0 draw against Sunderland on Saturday 9th May 2026.

Softfootball  understands that Despite already securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, the Red Devils delivered a below-par display, failing to register a shot on target until the 93rd minute against a well-organised Sunderland side.

It’s a tough place to come. They’ve had a good record here all season. We’ll take the point. A clean sheet is always good to get.

United struggled creatively throughout the match, lacking cutting edge in the final third and finding it difficult to break down Sunderland’s disciplined defensive structure.

However, Carrick refused to be overly critical of his players, pointing to the timing in the season and the effort shown by the squad.

It’s one of those games… we’ve done a lot of good work and made some changes today. I thought the attitude of the boys was really good.

The United boss also stressed the importance of perspective, insisting the result should not be overanalyzed despite the uninspiring performance.

With one home game remaining, Carrick emphasized the need to finish the campaign strongly as speculation continues over his future at the club.

It’s one game. It’s the time of the season. We’ve done a lot of good work and [made] some changes today. I thought the attitude of the boys was really good. Today is a positive result in terms of the point. Was it going to be a perfect game? We weren’t expecting a perfect game. It is what it is. It’s not something we need to overthink and it’s hard to be negative.

As a team, we could have been a bit better but we know what the boys can do. Everyone has contributed in such a good way, I’m pleased with the overall connection, communication and willingness to work for each other today.

We gave everything this week. We’ve got our last home game of the season that we will work towards this week. We look forward to it. It’s important to finish the season strong and I think today is a positive note for us.

While the point does little to impact United’s league position, the performance may raise questions as the club prepares for a crucial summer decision regarding Carrick’s long-term future.
