Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly closing in on a deal to acquire roughly one-third of Liverpool, with the club’s controlling shareholder Fenway Sports Group preparing to announce the transaction.

Softfootball has learnt that FSG, which has controlled Liverpool since 2010, could make an announcement as soon as this week, although sources have indicated that the timing could potentially move into next week.

Bezos would reportedly join an investor group alongside Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook. The consortium is understood to be led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.

Bezos, who founded Amazon, has an estimated fortune of more than £207 billion ($280 billion), while Saverin is reportedly worth over £23.7 billion ($32 billion).

If completed, the investment would represent a significant development in Liverpool’s ownership structure, although FSG would remain the club’s controlling shareholder.

The potential ownership development comes as Liverpool continue their summer transfer activity, with the club having received the final green light from Bradley Barcola on personal terms.

The Reds remain in direct negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over the French winger, with the two clubs yet to agree on the transfer fee.
