Edo Queens produced a sensational late comeback to defeat defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 and book a place in the semi-finals of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.

Softfootball understands that the Nigerian champions finished top of Group B with seven points from three matches after an unforgettable victory over the South African giants.

The Nigerian side had a golden opportunity to restore parity in the 54th minute, but Chioma Olise failed to convert from the penalty spot, further increasing the pressure on Moses Aduku’s team.

With time running out, Sundowns appeared destined to claim all three points before Edo Queens produced a remarkable turnaround deep into stoppage time.

Emem Essien ignited celebrations when she equalised five minutes into added time, giving the Nigerian side renewed hope. Moments later, substitute Mary Mamudu completed the dramatic comeback with a superb winning goal that sealed qualification.

The result ensured Edo Queens advanced to the last four as Group B winners, while FC Masar of Egypt secured the second semi-final spot after defeating Commercial Bank FC of Ethiopia 2-1.

For Mamelodi Sundowns, the defeat brought a disappointing end to their title defence, as they crashed out alongside Commercial Bank FC.

Edo Queens’ resilience, fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude proved decisive, keeping Nigeria’s hopes alive in Africa’s premier women’s club competition.
