CAF Suspends NFF Electoral Process as FIFA–CAF Joint Assessment Begins

The NFF electoral process has been suspended by CAF until further notice amid the deepening crisis in Nigerian football.

This development follows a turbulent two‑week period in which the NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and the Executive Committee resigned on 27 August 2026, with FIFA officially accepting the mass resignation on 1 September 2026.

FIFA also pledged continued engagement with the Federal Government, the NFF administration, and CAF to establish a comprehensive reform roadmap.

With the electoral process now halted, both governing bodies have taken immediate stabilising measures while investigations continue. Softfootball reports the following decisions from CAF and FIFA:

1. Suspension of the NFF electoral process until further notice.
2. No further actions or procedures relating to the election are permitted until the joint assessment is completed.
3. Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, NFF Deputy General Secretary, has been designated as the main point of contact between the NFF, FIFA, and CAF.
4. FIFA and CAF are conducting a full legal, governance, administrative and electoral assessment of the situation within the NFF.
5. A joint FIFA–CAF assessment mission will be dispatched to Abuja at the earliest opportunity.
6. The delegation will meet with NFF administrators, stakeholders, electoral bodies, and representatives of the Federal Government, including the National Sports Commission (NSC).

FIFA and CAF have emphasised that no decision has been taken regarding sanctions or further measures, pending the outcome of their investigations. They have urged all parties to maintain stability and comply fully with the directives issued.
