Luis Enrique targets more history as PSG chase UEFA Super Cup glory against Tottenham

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique says his side is eager to keep making history as they prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night, Softfootball reports.

The match, which kicks off at 9 pm at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, pits the reigning Champions League winners against last season’s Europa League champions. It will be the first time PSG contests the Super Cup since their European triumph last term.

Speaking to PSG TV and the media on the eve of the match, Enrique described the game as “very different from usual” and stressed that his team had approached it with enthusiasm.

He told the PSG media team:

“We’ve prepared for this match with enthusiasm, but I don’t know what level we’ll be able to perform at. It will be difficult, but we’ll do everything we can to win this trophy.”

The Spanish coach guided PSG to their first Champions League title last season, defying expectations and delivering on a long-standing club ambition. Now, he wants to use that success as a platform for further silverware.

Enrique continued:

“What we did last season was an achievement for everyone.

“We want to continue making history, that’s our goal. Last year, I don’t think anyone thought we were capable of winning the Champions League, but we did it. And for the future, we have even more dreams.”

PSG’s run to the Champions League crown last term was built on a balanced approach, combining the attacking flair of Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the goalkeeping competence of Gianluigi Donnarumma, whose days are likely to be numbered at the French giants.

The club has added further depth this summer with new signings, especially a new goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier, who is a possible replacement for the embattled Italian goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Enrique believes the hunger within the squad remains strong despite the high of last season, as Softfootball had earlier reported about Chevalier’s interest in winning his first silverware with the club.

Enrique concluded by saying:

“I think we have this mindset of wanting to be even better, to improve the team. Of course, it will be very difficult given last season, but that’s our mentality. It will be a big challenge for us.”

PSG will be playing a newly revamped Tottenham side under the tutelage of Frank Thomas, who will be experiencing his first competitive game as the manager of the North London side. The last time both sides, PSG and Tottenham, met was in 2017 during the International Champions Cup, where Spurs defeated PSG 4-2.

The UEFA Super Cup offers PSG the chance to add another European title to their growing collection and send a statement of intent ahead of the new season. Tottenham, under Thomas Frank, will provide a stern test, but Enrique’s men arrive in Udine determined to start the new season campaign by lifting a silverware.
