Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has revealed that a mocking banner displayed by Manchester City supporters motivated him during Tuesday’s dramatic Champions League play-off first-leg victory at the Etihad Stadium, Softfootball gathered.
Manchester City fans unveiled a giant banner before the match showing midfielder Rodri receiving the Ballon d’Or award, accompanied by the message:
Stop crying your heart out.
The display was seen as a reference to Real Madrid’s decision to boycott last year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony after Vinicius finished second behind Rodri in the voting.
However, it was Vinicius who had the final say on the pitch as Real Madrid secured a 3-2 victory.
The Brazilian played a key role in two of Madrid’s three goals. His effort was saved by Ederson before former City player Brahim Diaz followed up to make it 2-2.
Vinicius then took advantage of a mistake in the City defence in the 92nd minute, setting up Jude Bellingham to score the winning goal.
Speaking after the match, Vinicius admitted that the banner gave him additional motivation.
I saw the banner from Man City fans – and it motivated me even more,
Vinicius said.
Whenever rival fans do things, it gives me more strength to play a great game.
