Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has made clear that lifting the Premier League title is the club’s central goal this season, speaking ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes clash against Manchester City at Anfield.
Softfootball gathered that Van Dijk addressed Liverpool’s title ambitions in an interview with Mirror Football, with the Reds sitting eight points clear at the top of the table ahead of the fixture.
The result leaves them 16th in the table with 10 points, just one point above the relegation zone.
Van Dijk explained the mentality driving the squad this season:
It’s the experience that will obviously help you, in my opinion, and it should help you, and my feeling is, it will. If you play for Liverpool, then you always have these expectations.
I’m a winner. I want to win in each and everything I compete in.
He also struck a note of caution amid the optimism, acknowledging the challenges still to come:
We’re going to have difficult moments, going to have games where we play poor. But we want to find a way to win each and every game. And if you’re ready to suffer, then it could be a very special season,
Van Dijk added.
