Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan has claimed that Southampton were responsible for the collapse of Paul Onuachu’s proposed return to the Turkish club.
The Super Eagles striker has been a long-term target for Trabzonspor and recently scored in Southampton’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town.
According to Softfootball, Dogan said the Turkish club had reached an agreement with Onuachu but could not complete the transfer after Southampton repeatedly changed their asking price for the Nigerian forward. Dogan told Sports Witness.
We had agreed with Onuachu. We’re still seeing each other. Southampton asked for seven million and we gave them that, they asked for ten, we went up to nine with bonuses, then they increased the asking fee to fifteen million.
The Trabzonspor chief explained that the club were unwilling to continue negotiations after Southampton raised their demands again. He added saying:
So, they weren’t going to give him to us. Therefore, we won’t force a deal somewhere else. If it is not on our terms, we will not be able to make this transfer.
Onuachu previously enjoyed a successful spell with Trabzonspor before moving to Southampton and remains a popular figure among the Turkish club’s supporters.
