Liverpool 2-3 Monaco: Reds surrender two-goal lead in late pre-season defeat

Liverpool suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Monaco at Anfield, despite taking a commanding two-goal lead in Andoni Iraola’s first game at the stadium as manager, fresh off the 4-2 drubbing against Leeds United in their previous game.

Softfootball understands that the Reds made a fast start, with Alexander Isak opening his pre-season account in the 16th minute after combining with Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch. Florian Wirtz then doubled Liverpool’s advantage before the half-hour mark, finishing from close range after Cody Gakpo’s header caused a scramble in the Monaco box.

However, Monaco responded before the break when Virgil van Dijk conceded a penalty, allowing Aleksandr Golovin to calmly reduce the deficit from the spot.

The visitors continued their comeback after half-time, with Mika Biereth scoring at the second attempt after Giorgi Mamardashvili saved his initial effort. Liverpool were unable to regain control despite chances at both ends, with Mamardashvili producing several important saves to keep the Reds level.

Monaco eventually completed the turnaround in the 88th minute when Paris Brunner headed home from a corner, with Federico Chiesa unable to prevent the decisive finish.
