Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has revealed that a brief conversation with new Netherlands head coach Xavi was enough to convince him to continue his international career after seriously considering his future following the 2026 World Cup.
Van Dijk explained that he first needed time away with his family after the disappointment of the World Cup before sitting down with Xavi to discuss his plans. According to the defender, the meeting lasted only seconds before he knew he wanted to remain available for the Netherlands.
I needed a holiday with my family, then time to talk with Xavi… and after ten seconds, it was clear I’d carry on,
Van Dijk said.
Asked what Xavi told him that made such an immediate impact, the Liverpool captain gave a simple answer: “That I’m Virgil van Dijk!”
The 35-year-old explained that the conversation was ultimately about trust, appreciation and understanding his importance to the national team. Xavi has since confirmed Van Dijk will remain Netherlands captain as he begins a new era in charge.
Van Dijk’s decision also comes after he faced scrutiny following the Netherlands’ World Cup exit, with the defender rejecting claims that he was responsible for the team’s tactical decisions. He insisted that the coaching staff, rather than the players, determine the system.
Softfootball understands that Van Dijk’s continued leadership will be important as Xavi prepares the Netherlands for the Nations League.
The Liverpool captain has also previously defended Mohamed Salah during selection controversy at club level, stressing the Egyptian’s importance and insisting that the squad needs his quality and experience.
