Guinea striker Serhou Guirassy has responded with grace after finishing runner-up to Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award at the ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco.
Guirassy made the final five-man shortlist alongside Lookman, Ronwen Williams, Simon Adingra, and Achraf Hakimi, but ultimately saw the Nigerian succeed Victor Osimhen as the continent’s top individual honouree.
Softfootball notes that the Guinea international took to social media to share his reaction shortly after the result was announced. He wrote:
Even if the African Ballon d’Or was not awarded to me this year, that in no way takes away the pride I feel in having worn the colors of our dear Guinea high.
Above all, I would like to thank you, family, teammates, coaches, friends, for your unfailing support and trust.
Guirassy went on to express determination to keep pushing forward, both for his country and for the next generation of Guinean footballers. He added:
This is just the beginning. I will continue to give the best of myself, for you, for our country, and to inspire all young Guineans who dream big.
