Pep Guardiola has warned that Manchester City will face a difficult challenge against Liverpool in their upcoming Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium.
Following their Champions League exit to Real Madrid, the focus has shifted entirely to securing a top-four finish in the domestic league.
Softfootball reports that Guardiola emphasized the importance of this match for their European ambitions next season.
The City manager admitted that his squad is dealing with significant defensive injuries, including Manuel Akanji and potentially John Stones. Despite these setbacks, he insisted that his team remains competitive and capable of high-level performances. He stressed that every point is crucial as they navigate a congested and demanding fixture list while missing key personnel.
Guardiola addressed the fitness of key players, noting that Erling Haaland’s availability remains uncertain until closer to kick-off. He acknowledged that while having the Norwegian striker on the pitch makes them stronger, the team must adapt if he is unavailable.
The manager also refused to compare the current Liverpool side to the era under Jurgen Klopp out of respect. He stated:
We can compete with any team. We have two central defenders out for two to three months. The Premier League is massively important for us. In the Premier League we have played really good games. We are not stable but in other games such as against Newcastle, we have been at a high level.
