Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that family considerations played a major role in his decision to retire from football management after an illustrious career at Old Trafford.

The legendary Scotsman stepped down in 2013 after winning 13 Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League crowns, and numerous other trophies, bringing an end to one of the most successful managerial careers in football history.

Ferguson explained that his decision came after recognising that his wife, Cathy, needed more support following the death of her sister in October of the previous year. He realised it was the right time to devote more attention to his family after decades of prioritising football.

He acknowledged that Cathy had sacrificed so much throughout his career, taking care of their family while he focused on managing Manchester United. Seeing how happy she was when he informed her of his retirement confirmed to him that he had made the right choice.

Ferguson’s departure marked the end of a remarkable 26-year reign at Manchester United, during which he transformed the club into one of the world’s most successful football institutions.

Softfootball understands Ferguson’s decision was driven as much by family values as by football, with the former manager choosing to repay the unwavering support his wife had given him throughout his legendary career.
