Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has opened up on why he chose to represent Nigeria at international level, describing the decision as one driven by pride, passion, and family.
Born in Italy to Nigerian parents before moving to England as a child, Bassey was eligible to play for three countries.
However, the defender never hesitated when the opportunity to wear the green and white jersey arrived. Softfootball gathered that the 25-year-old accepted his first Super Eagles invitation in 2021 ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Bassey revealed that watching Nigeria face Lionel Messi’s Argentina at the 2018 FIFA World Cup sparked his dream of playing for the three-time African champions. He also recalled seeing Kenneth Omeruo in action during that match, which further motivated him.
I just knew that I wanted to play for Nigeria,
Bassey said, adding that the pride associated with representing the country made the decision straightforward.
The defender also spoke about the emotional support he receives from his family, especially his mother, whose passion for the national team continues to inspire him.
Bassey admitted that knowing millions of Nigerians are watching every time he steps onto the pitch gives him extra motivation to perform at his best.
