Nigeria’s Falconets have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after producing a stunning 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16 at the Bielsko-Biała Stadium.

The Falconets faced an experienced England side but showed no fear from the opening whistle, combining defensive discipline, determination and clinical finishing to secure a convincing victory.
Tosin Rafiu gave Nigeria the perfect start in the eighth minute with a brilliant individual effort. She worked her way into the England penalty area, shifted the ball onto her left foot and fired past the goalkeeper to put the Falconets ahead.

England responded by creating several opportunities, but Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma stood firm between the posts.
Uzoma produced a series of important saves to keep England at bay, with her biggest intervention coming in the 35th minute after England were awarded a penalty.

Rachel Maltby stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Uzoma got a touch to the effort and pushed it onto the post. The ball bounced back into play, but the Nigerian goalkeeper reacted quickly to collect it and preserve Nigeria’s 1-0 lead.
The Falconets returned from the break with renewed confidence and doubled their advantage just two minutes into the second half.
Janet Akekoromowei made it 2-0 in the 47th minute after the ball dropped invitingly inside the box following a corner. She made no mistake, smashing a left-footed effort into the net.

Akekoromowei battled past her marker before delivering the ball into the box, where Mamadu was perfectly positioned to finish and put the result beyond doubt.
Nigeria managed the remainder of the game intelligently, frustrating England and maintaining their defensive shape until the final whistle.
The victory highlighted the Falconets’ ability to compete against an England side with players who have benefited from regular high-level competition, including the Women’s Super League and football in the United States.
Nigeria’s youngsters refused to be intimidated, matching England’s intensity and taking their chances when they came.
Uzoma was particularly impressive, with her penalty save and several other crucial interventions helping Nigeria maintain control of the contest.
The victory was ultimately a complete team effort as the Falconets secured their place among the final eight teams at the tournament.
