Lazio manager Marco Baroni has explained his decision to replace Fisayo Dele-Bashiru at half-time during his side’s 2-0 defeat to AS Roma in the Serie A derby, Softfootball reports.
The Biancocelesti fell two goals behind within the opening 18 minutes and struggled to recover despite making changes after the interval.
Dele-Bashiru, who earned a starting place following his impressive display against Atalanta in Lazio’s final game of 2024, was withdrawn at the break and replaced by Senegal international Boulaye Dia.
Speaking after the match, Baroni admitted the Nigerian midfielder is still adapting to his tactical demands and has more to learn about operating in his preferred role. He said:
Dele-Bashiru is still learning the position and how to control the ball between the lines. We are also missing Matias Vecino for a long time, but that must not be an alibi.
The Lazio boss added that his side showed signs of improvement after the interval but stressed that maintaining their tactical identity remains the team’s biggest priority as they look to bounce back from the disappointing derby defeat.
