AS Roma have verbally agreed to sign Marten de Roon from Atalanta, with the 35-year-old defensive midfielder requesting the move in order to reunite with Gian Piero Gasperini.

Gasperini, who left Atalanta for Roma in June 2025, enjoyed a hugely successful relationship with De Roon during their time together in Bergamo. The Dutch midfielder became one of the manager’s most trusted players and eventually established himself as Atalanta’s long-serving captain.

De Roon’s desire to work with Gasperini again has played an important role in the proposed transfer, with Roma seeing the experienced midfielder as an ideal addition ahead of their 2026-27 Champions League campaign.

The Dutchman offers extensive knowledge of Gasperini’s tactical system, strong leadership qualities and considerable experience at the highest level. His ability to protect the defence, dictate play and provide tactical discipline could make him an important figure in Roma’s midfield.

Earlier this year, Softfootball reported that De Roon had made history at Atalanta after recording his 436th appearance for the club, surpassing Gianpaolo Bellini’s long-standing record of 435 appearances. The milestone further cemented his status as one of the most loyal and influential players in Atalanta’s history.

His potential departure therefore represents a significant moment for the Italian club, although the player appears ready for a new challenge.

For Roma, De Roon represents a cost-effective addition who can immediately provide experience and tactical understanding without the financial risk associated with signing a younger midfielder.

With a verbal agreement now in place, the clubs are expected to work on the remaining details as Roma look to complete the move and reunite De Roon with Gasperini in the Italian capital.
