Arne Slot has admitted that Liverpool FC “crumbled” during the second half of their 4–2 defeat to Aston Villa, a result that significantly dents their hopes of securing Champions League qualification.
Speaking in a press conference shared via the club’s official YouTube channel, Softfootball gathered that Slot acknowledged that his side lost control after falling behind, struggling to regain momentum as Villa capitalized through goals from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn.

The Liverpool manager pointed to defensive weaknesses as a major factor, highlighting that conceding three goals from set-pieces proved decisive. He noted that similar issues had surfaced in previous matches against top opponents such as Manchester United and Chelsea.
We’ve conceded far too man goals – but I think we’ve also scored not enough goals. We were fully in the game, fully able maybe to get a result, but I agree that after it went 2-1, we crumbled. It’s damaging because we needed either a win or maybe, maybe, maybe two draws would have been enough as well.
But now we know one thing for sure – we need a win next week if we have to do it ourselves. The other teams of course need to pick up points as well for us to need a win. That’s really damaging that we were not able to get a result, let alone a win here today.
Slot also cited a significant injury crisis, revealing that up to nine key players were unavailable, leaving the squad stretched during a crucial stage of the season. He admitted the defeat was “damaging,” confirming that his side now likely need a win in their final game to keep their top-four hopes alive.

I can understand at this moment in time [the fans] don’t have confidence or a lot of feeling that things can be much better next season, but I think they are underestimating what a transfer window can do, what a new start can do. I think we know quite well what to improve. One of the things we have to improve is very, very obvious, and I would have preferred not to talk about it here, but you’re actually almost forcing me to.
My opinion – and nobody has to agree with me – is that, even today, for large parts of the game we were close to a result, but when you are the better team, you need to generate more chances and score them, and we cannot concede as many set pieces as we have conceded this season. I don’t think the difference is so big, only doing the right thing in a few situations can have a massive upward possibility.
