Softfootball understands that Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma after reaching an agreement on personal terms with the 23-year-old.
Villa have now started exchanging documents with Parma for a deal worth around €35 million, with the goalkeeper expected to travel for his medical once the remaining formalities are completed.
The move has accelerated after Suzuki’s proposed transfer to Paris Saint-Germain collapsed over disagreements concerning agent commissions. Aston Villa quickly moved to capitalize on the situation and have reportedly secured the goalkeeper’s approval for a five-year contract.
Suzuki is being considered as a potential replacement for Emiliano Martínez, whose future at Villa Park remains uncertain. Juventus continue to show interest in the Argentine goalkeeper but would reportedly need guarantees over his finger injury and an agreement on the transfer fee before advancing their pursuit.
With documents already being exchanged between Villa and Parma, preparations are underway for Suzuki’s travel and medical. If successfully completed, the transfer would represent a significant investment in the club’s goalkeeping department and potentially signal the beginning of the end of Martínez’s time in Birmingham.
Villa are now focused on completing the final stages of the €35 million agreement and officially welcoming Suzuki to the Premier League.
