Club World Cup Set for 48-Team Expansion Amid Pressure from Elite Clubs

2 Min Read

The FIFA Club World Cup is reportedly set to expand from 32 to 48 teams in its next edition, following pressure from several top European clubs who missed out on the current format.

Among the most notable names are FC Barcelona and Manchester United. Softfootball understands that Barcelona would only qualify automatically if they win the UEFA Champions League. Their last Champions League triumph came in 2015, and as of 21st February 2026, there are doubts about their ability to lift the 2025/26 title.

Meanwhile, United supporters have been vocal in downplaying Chelsea’s celebration of their Club World Cup victory. Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain F.C. 3–0 in the final of the expanded 2025 tournament on 13 July 2025 at MetLife Stadium.

For Chelsea fans, however, the triumph carries historic significance. They became the first club to win the newly expanded 32-team edition and currently wear the prestigious gold champions badge until the next tournament is staged.

Softfootball believes that if additional elite clubs are pushing for inclusion in an expanded format, defending champions should also be granted automatic qualification similar to how title holders historically receive recognition and protection in competitions like the Champions League.

As FIFA considers structural changes, the debate now centres on balance: expanding commercial appeal while maintaining competitive integrity. One thing is certain, the Club World Cup is rapidly evolving into one of football’s most politically charged competitions.
