Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has backed his side to overturn Tottenham’s 1-0 first-leg advantage when the Carabao Cup semi-final returns to Anfield for the second leg.

Lucas Bergvall struck late to hand Spurs the win in London, though the moment came just seconds after the youngster escaped punishment for what Van Dijk felt should have been a second yellow card.

Softfootball understands the defender addressed the controversial decision while speaking to the club’s official website.

He said:

I think it was pretty clear. It was a coincidence and a minute later he scores the winner. It is what it is. He made a mistake in my opinion and I told him that.

Van Dijk was adamant the officiating error, while significant, wasn’t the sole reason behind Liverpool’s defeat. He added:

There’s a linesman there, a fourth official there, there’s VAR, a referee and he doesn’t get a second yellow. I’m not saying this is the reason why we lost tonight but it was a big moment in the game.
