Championship side Sunderland are reportedly working on a deal to re-sign Jordan Henderson during the January transfer window.

Softfootball understood that Sunderland have already made contact over a possible move for the experienced midfielder as they prepare for a serious promotion push in the new year.

According to Football Insider, the Black Cats believe Henderson’s leadership and experience could help guide them back to the Premier League.

Sunderland have started the Championship season strongly and currently sit top of the table after their opening nine matches.

Ajax are also not expected to block Henderson’s exit if the former Liverpool captain decides to leave the Dutch club.

Sunderland could offer the 34-year-old a short-term contract until the end of the season, with an option to extend the deal by another 12 months.

Henderson has made 12 appearances for Ajax this season and remains under contract with the Dutch giants until 2026.

The midfielder began his career at Sunderland, coming through the club’s youth system before breaking into the first team in 2008.

He made 79 appearances for the Black Cats before joining Liverpool, where he became one of the club’s most successful captains.

During his time at Anfield, Henderson won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

He later joined Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq in 2023 before moving to Ajax after just six months.
