Kylian Mbappé has joked that France would not allow him to continue playing international football until the age of 41 like Cristiano Ronaldo, while praising the Portuguese superstar for maintaining his fitness and performance level.
Speaking to BILD, Mbappé was asked whether Ronaldo’s decision to continue representing Portugal at 41 could inspire him to extend his own international career for as long.
The Real Madrid forward smiled as he suggested that playing for France until that age would not be realistic for him, while acknowledging what Ronaldo has achieved through his longevity.
Mbappé explained that Ronaldo’s career demonstrates how elite footballers can remain at the highest level for many years when they maintain both their physical and mental condition.
However, the French captain admitted that he does not expect to follow the same path, despite Ronaldo remaining an inspiration from his childhood.
The comments come as Ronaldo continues his international career under new Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus. The 41-year-old was included in Jesus’ first Portugal squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, despite previously suggesting that the 2026 World Cup could be his final tournament.
Jorge Jesus has also made it clear that Ronaldo will not receive preferential treatment, insisting that selection and playing decisions will be based on current performances.
