Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge believes Manchester City still have what it takes to overcome their difficult spell and remain contenders for the Premier League title.

Softfootball understands that despite City’s growing gap behind league leaders Liverpool, Sturridge is confident Pep Guardiola’s side possess the experience and quality needed to mount a strong comeback.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former England international insisted he would not write off the reigning champions, although he believes reinforcing the midfield should be a priority.

Sturridge argued that Manchester City are lacking a natural defensive midfielder capable of shielding the back line and breaking up opposition attacks.

He pointed out that players such as Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic and Ilkay Gündogan are more attack-minded or possession-focused midfielders rather than specialists in defensive duties.

According to Sturridge, the absence of a true holding midfielder has left City vulnerable, with opponents creating more chances than they typically would against Guardiola’s side.

He warned that unless the club strengthens that area of the squad, sustaining a serious Premier League title challenge will become increasingly difficult.

Manchester City have struggled to maintain their usual defensive solidity this season, leading to growing speculation that Guardiola could look to bolster his squad during the transfer window.

Despite their recent setbacks, Sturridge believes City’s winning mentality and experience of previous title races mean they should not be discounted, particularly if they address their midfield imbalance before the campaign enters its decisive stages.
