Arne Slot has outlined Liverpool’s summer transfer strategy, admitting the club must sell players in order to fund new signings following a disappointing 2025/26 season, Softfootball reports.

According to a recent post shared by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano via his official X channel, Liverpool manager stressed the financial reality facing the club, revealing that up to 10–11 players may need to be sold to finance just 5–6 incoming transfers.

The approach reflects the club’s commitment to a sustainable “sell-to-buy” model under ownership, balancing the books while planning a squad rebuild.

Romano posted:

Arne Slot: Last summer we had to sell 10-11 players to sign 5-6. That’s going to be another challenge this summer. We do have to replace the ones who are leaving but this club have shown so many times that this model works and with this model we can be successful and I am also proud to work for this club and work our model, it’s a nice way of trying to achieve your own success.

In other comment shared by Romano, Slot highlighted the situation has been intensified by the departure of key players, including Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, who are both set to leave on free transfers. The exits follow a similar pattern to Trent Alexander-Arnold, raising concerns among fans about contract management and asset value loss.

Arne Slot: We need to sell in order to buy new players. But we will lose Salah and Robertson on a free, that has happened already with Trent. As you know, the club that we are we need to recoup our money and to spend again.

Slot defended the club’s long-term strategy, backing the ownership’s sustainable model despite growing pressure. He emphasized alignment with the club’s leadership, including sporting director Richard Hughes, and reiterated a focus on youth development rather than expensive short-term fixes.

The comments come after Liverpool’s trophyless campaign, which saw them eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain with a heavy 4–0 aggregate defeat. Currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, the club faces increasing scrutiny from supporters.

Fan reactions have been largely critical, with many questioning the club’s transfer strategy and previous spending decisions. However, Slot remains confident that a measured rebuild can return Liverpool to competing at the highest level.
