The Premier League is set to introduce semi-automated offside technology from April 12, 2025, marking another major development in the use of technology in English football.
The system is expected to assist match officials when making offside decisions and should help reduce the time required for reviews. The introduction follows years of discussion about improving the efficiency of Video Assistant Referee decisions.
Softfootball reports that semi-automated technology has already been used in major competitions and is designed to provide officials with additional information when determining whether an attacking player is in an offside position.
The Premier League has continued to explore ways of improving its officiating system as clubs and supporters demand quicker and more consistent decisions. Offside calls have frequently generated controversy, particularly when margins between legal and illegal positions are extremely small.
The new technology will not remove the responsibility of match officials. Instead, it will provide assistance to the refereeing team when assessing incidents.
Its introduction is expected to make the decision-making process more efficient while maintaining human oversight. Premier League clubs will therefore begin adapting to another significant technological change as the season progresses.
