Jay‑Jay Okocha has narrated how he got his famous name “Jay‑Jay”, explaining that it all began in the neighbourhood where he grew up, surrounded by football‑loving kids, including his two brothers.
During his appearance on the ObiOne Podcast, Okocha said:
It started in the neighbourhood where we grew up. All of us were footballers; we were just on the street playing, and my two brothers played as well.
We had a few Austins then, so to identify which Austin was which, they started calling me Austin Jay‑Jay’s brother. From there, Jay‑Jay stuck.
Softfootball understands that as Okocha travelled more, many people struggled to pronounce his full name Augustine, so Jay‑Jay became the easier and more recognisable option. Eventually, he decided to adopt the name officially, adding it to his passport and embracing the identity that would later become legendary in world football.
