Riyad Mahrez has verbally agreed to join Qatari side Al-Shamal SC on a short-term contract, with the Algerian winger now set to complete his move after leaving Al Ahli in June.

According to @dzfoot, an agreement is in place between Mahrez and Al-Shamal, with the remaining formalities expected to be completed before the transfer is officially sealed.

The move will give the former Manchester City star an opportunity to continue his career in Qatar after his spell with Al Ahli came to an end. Mahrez joined the Saudi Arabian club in 2023 following a successful five-year period at Manchester City, where he won multiple domestic trophies and the UEFA Champions League.

Softfootball understands that Al-Shamal have moved quickly to secure the experienced forward, who remains one of Algeria’s most recognisable footballers.

Meanwhile, Mahrez’s former club Al Ahli have appointed Marino Pusic as their new head coach. The Croatian coach takes charge as the Saudi Arabian club begin a new chapter following the departure of their previous manager.

Pusic arrives with coaching experience from his time in European football and will now be tasked with guiding Al Ahli through the next phase of their project.

Mahrez’s departure means Al Ahli will no longer have the Algerian winger in their attacking ranks, while the player prepares for a new challenge in Qatar.

For Al-Shamal, securing Mahrez represents the arrival of a player with considerable experience at the highest level. His technical ability, creativity and experience could provide another attacking option for the Qatari side.

The transfer is now expected to be finalised, with Mahrez set to begin his next chapter at Al-Shamal after his departure from Al Ahli.
