The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey following Fulham’s FA Cup victory over Manchester United.
Bassey scored Fulham’s opening goal before the London club secured a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory at Old Trafford to book a place in the quarter-finals.
After the match, the 25-year-old shared screenshots of racist and homophobic messages he received on social media, prompting widespread condemnation from across the football community. Softfootball understands the NFF has joined Fulham in calling for an end to all forms of discrimination.
In a statement posted on X, the federation reaffirmed its support for the defender and condemned the abuse in the strongest possible terms. The statement read:
The NFF stands firmly against all forms of discrimination, including racial abuse, and fully supports Calvin Bassey in the face of these unacceptable actions.
The federation added that it remains committed to promoting a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for every player, both on and off the pitch.
The NFF also pledged its unwavering support for Bassey, insisting the fight against racism in football and society must continue.
