Softfootball understands that Middlesbrough have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Ashley Phillips in a permanent transfer worth £7 million plus performance-related add-ons.
The 21-year-old centre-back is now set to undergo his medical before the remaining formalities are completed, bringing an end to weeks of negotiations that initially centred on a loan move before evolving into a permanent transfer.
His arrival represents another important piece of Middlesbrough’s summer rebuild following the recent signing of Tottenham striker Will Lankshear. The club believes Phillips has the potential to become a cornerstone of their defence as they push for promotion to the Premier League.
For Spurs, the transfer is part of a wider squad reshuffle as they create room for new arrivals ahead of the season. The North London club continue to be linked with several attacking reinforcements, including reported interest in Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

With the transfer fee agreed and only the medical and final paperwork remaining, Phillips is expected to be unveiled as a Middlesbrough player in the coming days.
