Cole Palmer has withdrawn from the England squad after suffering a small muscle injury, with the decision reportedly made as part of a precautionary load-management plan.

Softfootball reports that Palmer was recalled to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad after missing out on the 2026 World Cup, but he will now miss the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czech Republic and Croatia. Reports indicate that Chelsea and the England medical teams are keen to manage his workload and avoid aggravating the problem.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign with Chelsea, registering four goals and two assists in seven appearances across competitions. He also played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s recent 3-0 defeat to Brentford before the injury decision was made.

Softfootball believes the decision reflects the importance of keeping Palmer fully fit for the long season ahead, particularly after he endured several injury problems during the previous campaign. Managing his minutes now could help Chelsea protect one of their key attacking players.

Palmer’s commitment to Chelsea has also remained clear despite his Manchester City background. The England international has previously made it clear that he is settled in London and focused on his career at Stamford Bridge, reinforcing the message behind the “I don’t miss Manchester” sentiment.

With Palmer unavailable, Morgan Gibbs-White has been called up as his replacement, giving Tuchel another attacking option ahead of England’s demanding Nations League schedule as the Three Lions aim to secure crucial victories and top their competitive group.
