Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that he is involved in discussions over the future of highly-rated academy youngster JJ Gabriel, while stressing the need for caution because of the teenager’s age.
Gabriel, 15, has reportedly asked to leave Manchester United and requested the cancellation of his registration after a strong start to the season. The forward recently scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut and had been expected to be involved with the senior squad before his situation emerged.
Asked whether he was part of the conversations regarding Gabriel’s future, Carrick confirmed that the club’s key figures are involved in the discussions. However, he stressed that United must handle the situation carefully, with the player’s welfare, wellbeing and level of exposure remaining important considerations.
Softfootball believes the situation will require careful management from Manchester United, particularly given Gabriel’s age and the attention surrounding his development. Reports indicate that United remain hopeful of resolving the situation and convincing the youngster to stay at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Carrick’s own position at Manchester United has already been secured after the club confirmed a new contract for the head coach running until 2028. The agreement, announced in May, followed his continuation as the club’s first-team head coach.
With Carrick now committed to the club beyond the current campaign, his involvement in discussions surrounding academy prospects such as Gabriel could become significant as United continue to develop young talent.
The immediate focus, however, remains finding a resolution that protects Gabriel’s development while addressing his desire for a change in circumstances.
