Manchester City Look to Overcome NewCastle United at St James’ Park

This weekend, Saturday 22nd November, 2025 will see Newcastle United host Manchester City at St James’ Park in what is going to be a thrilling Premier League clash.

Newcastle head into the game with mixed form while they’ve had some strong displays, consistency has been a struggle. Softfootball reported their Premier League against Brentford, where they had been disappointed and made to go home with a 3-1 defeat from Brentford.

Manchester City has won 79 matches while Newcastle United has won 73 with 42 draws in a total of 194 matches. In their last six matches, Manchester City has won 5 games including their 3-0 win over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium which took City to second in the Premier League.

Star player, Erling Haaland from Manchester City has just one goal to reach his 100th Premier League goal and he is expected to perform exceptionally well in the weekend match against Newcastle.

In an interview which was shared in the club’s official X handle, Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola gave some updates about his players.

On Haaland’s incredible performance against Estonia which helped Norway qualify for the world cup, he said, He’s incredible this season. He’s breaking a lot of personal records in the Premier League and with Norway.

I’m happy for him with his national team and I saw yesterday that many of the squad were not born the last time Norway were in the World Cup. Qualification has been incredible, he’s discovered a lot of goals. As a world class player, he deserves to play at a World Cup so I’m happy for him.

He also talked about the team’s overall fitness and players who are injured;

Everybody is fit except Kova and Rodri, Rodri is making steps good, it’s almost three weeks since his last setback. He knows he has to take time to recover well mentally and physically and to be consistent from now until the end.

Eddie Howe, Newcastle United coach has also spoken in an interview which was shared in the club’s official X handle. He talked about his players and their upcoming fixtures.

Howe gave updates on the progress of Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope, saying;

Anthony Gordon is very close. He’s worked well during the break and he’s touch and go for the game. We’ll make a very late decision. Nick Pope has trained and there’s no problems there.

About Tino Livramento’s fitness, he said,

He’s very close. He’s trained in the international break which is great to see. He’s such an important player for us and it’s great to have him back training with the group. He’s done a lot of work. He’s been very, very good professionally with how he’s dealt with the injury and the work he’s done with the physios so I’d say he’s in good shape.

Eddie Howe is optimistic about Newcastle United’s upcoming schedule and highlighted the team’s ability to adapt,

It goes right to the end of January, and I think this is going to be a really enjoyable spell. We’ve really enjoyed the Champions League challenge and then going back to the Premier League and that yo-yo effect we have to deal with better. It’s been a real challenge away from home and we have to navigate that better but I think we have to squad to cope with that, especially if we can get these last remaining players fit that have been close.

Team News

For Newcastle United, Anthony Gordon playing the match is still in doubt because of a hip injury. Sandro Tonali is expected to be ready for the match.

Nick Pope is also expected to play the match after recovering from a concussion and having been cleared by Italy’s team. Yoane Wissa and Tino Livramento won’t be available due to injuries.

Dan Burn is suspended because of a red card incident and won’t be playing the match.

Moving on to the Manchester City squad, there’s a little doubt on if Rodri will participate in the match due to fitness concerns which are being looked into. Mateo Kovacic has an injury on the heel and won’t be playing.

Prediction

Manchester City has been clear favorites for a long time and because of their attacking strength and some loopholes in Newcastle’s defence, the game is expected to go in their favor.

Haaland will be a key threat for Newcastle United and Manchester city could come out victorious with a 2-1 result. Manchester City 2-1 Newcastle United.
