Liverpool have been dealt a defensive setback after Joe Gomez suffered a hamstring injury during Sunday’s emphatic 5-0 Premier League victory over West Ham United.

The versatile defender was forced off in the 37th minute at the London Stadium after pulling up during a sprint and was replaced by Jarell Quansah. Softfootball understands manager Arne Slot expects Gomez to spend a significant period on the sidelines.

Speaking after the match, Slot said:

You saw today an injury of Joe Gomez. If a player says he wants to stop, he has to be changed.

The Liverpool boss admitted the early signs point to a hamstring problem that could keep the England international out for several weeks.

In a sprint, then we all know it’s a hamstring and we all know it’s going to take a while before he is back. I don’t know how long but he will be out for quite a bit,

Slot explained.

Despite the injury setback, Liverpool produced another dominant display to strengthen their position at the top of the Premier League table as they continue their push for the title.
