Liverpool strengthened their grip on the Premier League summit with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday.

Softfootball understands that Arne Slot’s side capitalised on Manchester City’s latest setback to open a five-point lead at the top of the table after collecting 28 points from their opening league matches.

Darwin Nunez gave Liverpool the perfect start by breaking the deadlock in the 20th minute before Mohamed Salah wrapped up the victory with six minutes remaining.

The result was made even sweeter for the Reds after reigning champions Manchester City threw away a lead to lose 2-1 against Brighton at the Amex Stadium earlier in the day.

Pep Guardiola’s side have now suffered four consecutive defeats in all competitions, marking their worst run of results under the Spanish manager.

Before the loss to Brighton, City had already been beaten by Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth and Sporting Lisbon, leaving the defending champions under increasing pressure as Liverpool continue to build momentum at the top of the table.
