Softfootball can confirm a major transfer twist as Liverpool have reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Ronald Araújo on loan.

A verbal club-to-club agreement has been reached and approved by Barcelona sporting director Deco, with the deal now moving towards completion. Liverpool have also signed all the necessary documents with Barça for the Uruguay international’s temporary move to Anfield.

The agreement includes a buy option for Liverpool, but the clause is not mandatory. The Reds will also cover 100% of Araújo’s salary during his loan spell.

Araújo is expected to travel on Sunday, with Liverpool delighted to have secured the surprise arrival of the Barcelona centre-back as they strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool continue to work on another exciting young defensive target, with the club intensifying their interest in Ibrahima Mbaye.

The Reds are in direct contact with Mbaye’s representative, Jorge Mendes, as they attempt to convince the highly-rated youngster of Liverpool’s long-term project.

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayer Leverkusen already have a strong relationship and have opened discussions over Mbaye, but Liverpool remain firmly in the race.
