Robert Lewandowski nearly wore a Manchester United shirt more than a decade before he became one of Europe’s most feared strikers elsewhere.

The Barcelona forward opened up on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast about a 2012 approach from Sir Alex Ferguson that ultimately fell through.
Softfootball understands Lewandowski described the phone call itself as unforgettable, recalling:
I remember one conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson. I knew what I should tell him. Yeah, of course, I want to join Manchester United.
I said yes to join Manchester United because if Sir Alex Ferguson calls you, you cannot say no. Especially when I was 22 or 23 years old.
The move never materialized, and Lewandowski pointed to Borussia Dortmund’s reluctance to sell as the likely reason, recalling a conversation with the club’s president insisting he was too important to lose.
Whether Ferguson ever reached back out remains unclear, but the near-miss adds an intriguing footnote to Lewandowski’s career path.
