Benedict Iroha didn’t mince words after watching Nigeria’s shock defeat to Rwanda in person.
The former Super Eagles defender, who attended the match in Uyo, called it the worst performance he could have expected from the national team, even as he continued to back head coach Augustine Eguavoen for the top job.
Softfootball can reveal Iroha spoke to the press at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, saying:
That was the poorest performance I could have ever expected from the Super Eagles. They totally disappointed the coach with that level of performance.
He argued the dead-rubber fixture was wasted as a chance to build squad depth, adding:
The players’ mentality was poor. They disappointed the coach and failed to rise to the occasion.
Iroha did single out substitutes Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen for praise, noting the energy they brought off the bench.
He closed by urging the NFF to hand Eguavoen a formal contract, pointing to the bond he’s built with the squad as proof he’s the right man for the job.
