Victor Boniface’s struggles in a Super Eagles shirt have become impossible to ignore, and Augustine Eguavoen says he’s addressed the issue directly with the striker.
Boniface again failed to find the net in Monday’s 2-1 defeat to Rwanda, extending a scoreless run that stretches back to his international debut in September 2023 — 11 games without a goal.
Softfootball understands Eguavoen isn’t ready to give up on the Bayer Leverkusen forward despite the numbers, telling reporters after Boniface was substituted in the 89th minute:
We all know what Boniface is capable of doing, especially in his club, and when he comes back here, we give him a lot of confidence, a lot of playing time but he is not hitting the back of the net for whatever reason. I have spoken with him; I’m somebody who always gives players confidence.
Eguavoen made clear the conversations haven’t changed his stance on Boniface’s role, adding that the striker “will remain part of the squad” heading into Nigeria’s next assignments.
