Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has revealed the emotional and physical challenges he faced during his lengthy injury layoff, admitting he had to restart his rehabilitation after suffering setbacks.
Softfootball understands that the Dutch left-back is finally nearing a return to first-team action after spending almost 18 months on the sidelines.

Malacia recently took a major step forward in his recovery by playing 45 minutes for Manchester United’s Under-21 side against Huddersfield, having also returned to full training.
Speaking to The Athletic, the 25-year-old reflected on the difficult journey, saying the experience tested his patience like never before.
“I have a lot of patience, but during this process I realised I probably have more patience than anyone else in the world right now,” he said.
Malacia explained that the complexity of his injury required constant attention from medical specialists, prompting the club to assign a dedicated support team focused entirely on his recovery.
Despite the extra care, the defender admitted he eventually had to begin his rehabilitation from scratch after complications emerged.
“I had to start my rehab over, basically,” he revealed.
While the setback was disappointing, Malacia said he only allowed himself one day to feel frustrated before resetting his mindset and committing to the process once again.
He stressed that there was no desire to rush his comeback, noting that both he and the medical staff had learned valuable lessons from earlier attempts to accelerate his recovery.
Looking back, Malacia believes every obstacle has helped shape him.
I don’t see anything as a mistake anymore—only as a lesson,
he said.
The defender added that everything happens for a reason and believes the difficult journey has made him mentally stronger ahead of his long-awaited return to competitive football.
