Pep Guardiola isn’t going anywhere just yet. Manchester City confirmed on Thursday that their manager has agreed a new two-year contract extension, pushing his total time at the Etihad past the decade mark once it takes effect.
Softfootball can reveal the timing carries extra significance given recent upheaval at the club, speculation over Guardiola’s future had intensified in recent months, especially after City confirmed director of football Txiki Begiristain would depart at season’s end. His previous deal had been set to expire this summer.
Since replacing Manuel Pellegrini in 2016, Guardiola has transformed City into a genuine European powerhouse, collecting 18 trophies along the way, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League crown.
Before Manchester, his managerial career had already produced silverware at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
With his position now secured through at least two more campaigns, attention will turn to whether Guardiola can guide City back to the heights that defined his first eight years at the helm.
