The 27-year-old played a decisive role from the opening whistle, setting up Marten de Roon for Atalanta’s first goal before providing another assist for Charles De Ketelaere to make it 3-0.

Lookman then turned goalscorer, netting Atalanta’s fourth and fifth goals to cap a memorable afternoon for La Dea and further underline his importance to the team.

Speaking after the dominant victory, Gasperini applauded both Lookman and De Ketelaere for their remarkable development over the past year.

Lookman and De Ketelaere have grown. This year they are much stronger players,

Gasperini said.

The veteran coach also reflected on the Nigerian’s journey following last season’s Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped Nigeria reach the final.

After the Africa Cup of Nations, Lookman had a difficult period, then he exploded and now he is performing at those levels,

he added.

Lookman’s outstanding display took his Serie A tally to four goals this season, while his all-round contribution continues to strengthen Atalanta’s push for another top-four finish. His recent form will also be a major boost for the Super Eagles ahead of upcoming international assignments.
