Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini admitted that Ademola Lookman was mistakenly substituted during the club’s 1-0 home defeat to Lazio.

Lookman started the encounter but was withdrawn during the match following what Gasperini described as a misunderstanding.

The Nigerian forward had been an important attacking player for Atalanta and his early departure came as a surprise given his ability to influence matches.

Atalanta ultimately suffered a narrow defeat, with Lazio securing an important away victory.

Gasperini later acknowledged that the decision to substitute Lookman was based on a misunderstanding rather than a tactical plan. The revelation added another layer to an already frustrating afternoon for the Bergamo club.

Lookman has consistently played an important role in Atalanta’s attacking system, contributing with goals, assists and his ability to create opportunities. His pace and direct style have made him particularly valuable when Atalanta are attempting to break down organized defenses.

The defeat also represented a missed opportunity for Atalanta as they looked to strengthen their position in the Serie A table. For Lookman, the incident was an unusual moment in a season in which he had continued to establish himself as one of the club’s most important players.

Gasperini will now hope there are no similar misunderstandings in future matches as Atalanta continue their campaign.
