Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he advised people within the club to sign Declan Rice before the midfielder eventually joined Arsenal.

Rice became one of the most sought after midfielders in England after establishing himself as a key player for West Ham United.

Arsenal eventually secured his signature in a major transfer, beating competition from several clubs interested in the England international.

Ferdinand believes Manchester United missed an opportunity by failing to complete the deal.

The former defender said he had urged people at the club to make every effort to sign Rice because of the qualities he could bring to the midfield.

Rice has since become an important player for Arsenal and has played a major role in Mikel Arteta’s team.

His ability to defend, carry the ball forward and contribute in attack has made him one of the most complete midfielders in the Premier League.

Ferdinand’s comments highlight the belief that Rice could have addressed some of Manchester United’s midfield problems.

The England international has continued to develop since moving to Arsenal and has become an important part of their pursuit of major trophies.

Manchester United will now have to look elsewhere as they continue rebuilding their squad.
