Chelsea battled back to earn a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Moises Caicedo’s superb second-half strike cancelling out Bruno Fernandes’ penalty, Softfootball reports.
The result came in Manchester United’s first Premier League match since the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, with interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy taking charge from the sidelines.
The opening hour produced few clear-cut opportunities as both sides struggled to find a breakthrough despite spells of attacking intent. Chelsea enjoyed more possession, while United looked dangerous on the counterattack through Rasmus Højlund and Alejandro Garnacho.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 70th minute when United were awarded a penalty after Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez brought down Højlund while attempting to claim the ball inside the box.
Captain Bruno Fernandes confidently stepped up and sent Sanchez the wrong way to hand the hosts a deserved lead.
Chelsea, however, responded quickly and found the equaliser through Caicedo. Following a partially cleared corner, the Ecuadorian midfielder met the loose ball with a powerful low volley that beat Andre Onana despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the effort.
The draw leaves Chelsea fourth in the Premier League table with 18 points after 10 matches, while Manchester United remain 13th with 12 points.
United are preparing for a new era under Ruben Amorim, who was officially appointed as the club’s new head coach following Ten Hag’s dismissal. The Portuguese manager is expected to take charge after officially joining the club on November 11.
Both teams will now turn their attention to their upcoming fixtures as they look to build momentum in the weeks ahead.
