Victor Boniface isn’t letting an awards omission define his season. The Bayer Leverkusen forward addressed missing out on the CAF Player of the Year shortlist in a conversation on X, after a campaign that included an unbeaten Bundesliga title and a runner-up finish in the Europa League final against Atalanta.
Softfootball understands Boniface questioned the award’s criteria more than his own form, saying:
Not sad, but disappointed because I had an amazing season last season, so for me not to be there — maybe the award is for African players in AFCON, I don’t know.
But in general, if it’s for African Player of the Year, I think I had a great season. I don’t need to prove to anybody; I don’t really care about awards and stuff. But of course, as a football player, I want to improve, I want to do more for myself.
Boniface’s frustration is understandable given the numbers behind his campaign, which included key contributions in both domestic and European competition for Bayer Leverkusen.
For Boniface, though, the focus stays on the next performance rather than the last snub.
