Belgium and Iran face a crucial World Cup 2026 showdown on Sunday as both nations look to secure their first victory in Group G. With all four teams currently tied on one point, three points in Los Angeles could prove decisive in the race for qualification.

Belgium began their tournament with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Egypt. The Red Devils fell behind after Emam Ashour’s stunning strike before veteran forward Romelu Lukaku helped rescue a point, forcing Mohamed Hany into an own goal.

The result extended Belgium’s recent struggles on the global stage, with the team now winless in their last three World Cup matches after previously dominating the competition. Following group-stage elimination at Qatar 2022 and a last-16 exit at Euro 2024, Belgium are under pressure to deliver despite their talented squad.

Iran also showed resilience in their opening match, fighting back twice to draw 2-2 with New Zealand. Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mahbi found the net to earn a valuable point in a match that carried extra significance due to the uncertainty surrounding their tournament participation.

This will be the first senior meeting between Belgium and Iran, but history favours the Europeans, with Iran winning only three of their previous 19 World Cup matches.

Team News

Belgium could make changes after an unconvincing opening performance, although Romelu Lukaku’s fitness remains a concern. Charles De Ketelaere may continue as a false nine, supported by Leandro Trossard and Matias Fernandez-Pardo.

Iran have doubts over Roozbeh Cheshmi and Saman Ghoddos, who picked up an ankle issue against New Zealand. Veteran Ramin Rezaeian is expected to continue after becoming the oldest player to score and assist in the same World Cup match.

Captain Mehdi Taremi will lead Iran’s attack as he searches for more international goals.

Possible Lineups
